Kirill Gerstein in Johannes Brahms’s Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15

Tuesday, 2 December 2025 , ora 12.24

In Kirill Gerstein's art, the traditions of Russian, American, and Central European music intertwine seamlessly. The cultural heritage shaped by his life experiences, as well as his collaborations with renowned orchestras and conductors, have given him the possibility to embrace an immense repertoire and accumulate a vast stage experience. This has made him the ideal interpreter to highlight both the vehement pianistic virtuosity characteristic of Johannes Brahms's Piano Concerto No. 1 in D minor, Op. 15, and the unparalleled beauty of the melodic constructions within this Romantic masterpiece.

We will hear Kirill Gerstein on Thursday, 27th of November 2025, as the soloist of the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of conductor Elim Chan. He also took part in this autumn's "George Enescu" International Festival, where he performed Robert Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor, and now reaffirms his passion for German musical Romanticism once again.

A highly admired personality of her generation, conductor Elim Chan, born in 1986 in Hong Kong, possesses an extensive repertoire that spans symphonic works from the Classical era to the present day.

With the Danish National Symphony Orchestra, she will conduct two additional works: the Entr'acte No. 3 from the incidental music to "Rosamunde", composed by Franz Schubert in 1823 for Helmina von Chézy's play "Rosamunde, Fürstin von Zypern" ("Rosamunde, Princess of Cyprus"). The evening will conclude with Symphony No. 9 in E-flat major, Op. 70 by Dmitri Shostakovich. The composer surprised his contemporaries in 1945 with this work filled with humanity and joy, offering a striking contrast to his earlier wartime symphonies. It even stirred Stalin's discontent, as he had hoped for a grandiose work in the spirit of Beethoven's Symphony No. 9.

We look forward to welcoming you on Thursday, 27th of November 2025, at 8:30 p.m., to the concert performed by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Elim Chan, which Radio România Muzical brings to you live from the Concert Hall in Copenhagen!
