About music and life with the great mezzo-soprano Viorica CORTEZ

Wednesday, 10 December 2025 , ora 12.07

Biographical volumes, extensive film documentaries, and several TV and radio shows have been dedicated to her - rightly so, for she has traced a great and brilliant international trajectory for the Romanian vocal art in the musical history of many decades.

From resounding successes on famous opera stages across the world to fairly recent incredible interpretative performances at some musical events, Viorica Cortez has received countless minutes of applause meant to reward a remarkable talent, an impressive dedication to music, which was materialized through hard-work and sacrifices, and an authentic artistic temperament, which had always been extremely malleable and adequate for the multitude of roles she had given life to throughout her extensive international career. But not only that: her naturalness, spontaneity, and warmth present not only in her voice, but in her gaze and her demeanour as well, had brought her even closer to the audience.

Many years ago, I had heard about her successes, about the way she was sought after and desired on the prestigious posters of the international musical life: I had also heard her in the beginning of the year 1990, during the TV broadcast of the famous show in Vienna, for which great voices had reunited on stage in a gesture of solidarity for Romania. By chance, I had the opportunity to meet her at the Otopeni airport, when she returned to Bucharest to sing at the Radio Hall: with simplicity and excitement, with the friendly energy and attitude that I have found in her even now, around the anniversary of an incredible number of years, Viorica Cortez charms one through her way of speaking and of telling stories, as she always did by singing. With sincerity as well as with humour, with the hint of a preserved Moldavian accent and the swiftness of her sentences, uttered with such a naturalness, one can listen to her evoking legends of the world's great opera houses, alongside whom she performed in memorable shows… It is said that it's not elegant to mention a lady's age, yet… Mrs. Viorica Cortez impresses one with her young spirit, with the generosity of her words and the freshness of her memories, through a recorded phone call dialogue for her listeners and for this edition of About Music and Life…, from December 2025 - a month in which the famous mezzo-soprano celebrates 9 decades of life!

Radio România Muzical gives you the opportunity to listen or re-listen to some of the recordings made throughout a glorious career built mostly abroad, as well as the opportunity "to charge" the batteries of your soul by listening to her stories… On Saturday, at 1:00 P.M. - the rerun of the first show. The series, then, continues in the next two weeks - on Tuesdays, at 7:00 P.M. (and the rerun of these editions - on Saturdays, at 1:00 P.M.)
