Le chant des Muses. Baroque pieces by women composers- CD Review, November 27th 2025
On November 7th 2025, Eudora Records label of Madrid released the album Le Chant des muses ("The Song of Muses"), which features pieces by women composers of the Baroque period, many of which haven't been heard in three centuries. The recording sessions took place in the Auditorium in Girona, in September of 2024, an initiative spearheaded by Spanish violinist Anna Urpina, disciple of master Enrico Onofri. She's a musician who tackles various types of repertoires, playing Baroque instruments, as well as modern ones. For the printing of the new album, she was joined by a group of talented musicians: pianist Daniel Oyarzabal, cellist Nicola Brovelli, singer Maria Hinojosa and Nacho Laguna on theorbo and guitar.
Anna Urpina dedicates this album to the forgotten women composers, whose Baroque music went unknown. In the disc's presentation material, she writes: "In memory of those women whose dreams were a whisper. Ideas that never saw the music sheet, music that died in the air, words that never left the soul. Silence that weighs heavy, like an unsung melody, like a verse without an echo. Today, in their name, we let the art of these composers talk and inspire us". Violinist Anna Urpina undertook extensive research activities to uncover these manuscripts in archives and libraries in Paris and Venice, giving us a comprehensive look at Baroque music from the perspective of women composers with remarkable artistic qualities, with sensibility and profound knowledge of counterpoint techniques.
Violinist Anna Urpina, 36 years old, was born in Barcelona and studied in Spain, as well as the Royal Conservatory of Brussels and the University for Music and Theatre in Leipzig with Romanian violinist Mariana Sîrbu. She collaborated with famous ensembles, such as the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment or the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra, and had concerts at prestigious European festivals. In 2022, Anna Urpina launched her debut album, Baroque Modern, a CD that was very successful and won prizes in Europe and the United States of America. Last year she recorded her second album, Le Chant des Muses.
The disc includes pieces by Marieta Morosina Priuli, Elisabeth Jacquet de la Guerre, Maddalena Casulana, Anne Guedon de Presles, Isabella Leonarda, Mademoiselle Duval, Francesca Caccini, Zulema de la Cruz Castillejo, Helena Cánovas Parés, Mademoiselle Buttier and Lady Mary Dering.
