Leipziger Streichquartett. Joseph Haydn – String Quartets, op. 55. CD Review, March 17th
One of the most valuable chamber music ensembles of the past four decades Lepiziger Streichquartett has released numerous recording projects - complete works dedicated to composers such as Beethoven, Brahms, Mendelssohn or Mozart. In 2009, on the bicentennial of the Joseph Haydn's passing, the German ensemble began the complete recording of the string quartets composed by the prolific Austrian composer. And on March 6th, 2026 they released their newest album, the 21st of this collection published by the Musikproduktion Dabringhaus und Grimm label.
The CD features the three quartets Op.55, mature works, composed in 1788 by Joseph Haydn, created during the peak of musical classicism, characterized by elegance and optimism.
The Leipzig String Quartet, an ensemble with extraordinary artistic experience, was founded back in 1988 by the members of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. The ensemble won the prestigious award ARD from München in 1991, has performed extensively on stages across the Europe, North and South America, Australia, Africa and Asia, has collaborated with renowned artists, such as Menahem Pressler, Alfred Brendel, Christian Zacharias or Andreas Staier and has released over 100 recordings for which has received, among others, awards such as the Diapason d'Or and Echo Klassik. The quartet's lineup has changed over the time, the ensemble currently consists of violinists Stefan Arzberger and Tilman Büning, violist Ivo Bauer and cellist Peter Bruns, all of whom plays on valuable 18th century instruments.
